Who can register nsw.gov.au domain names?
nsw.gov.au is a “closed” domain space, available for use by NSW Government and local council organisations within NSW only.
A registrant (or domain owner) must be:
- an organisation established by an Act of Parliament or government-only regulation as a government department or agency
- a local government entity
- a statutory authority
- other defined government body.

How to register and manage your domain names
NSW Government agencies must have a Government Netregistry account. Accounts are the responsibility of account holders. If you are unsure who your account holder is, email email@example.com.
Your account holder will lodge your domain name application with Netregistry. Your application is then forwarded to DPC Strategic Communications to check it complies with national Domain Policies and Guidelines.
Once the domain name is registered, account holders are responsible for managing domain renewals, registry records and paying domain accounts.
Your account holder can also help you to delete a domain or transfer one to a different cluster or agency.
Domains for NSW Local Councils
All local councils have a Government Netregistry account managed by an account holder. This person is usually the IT manager or coordinator. To register a new nsw.gov.au domain for your council or to manage, delete or transfer and existing domain, please contact your account holder.
